About

My work belongs to the tradition of figurative landscape painting, particularly Pierre Bonnard's expressive use of color and Peter Doig's dreamlike landscapes, but it departs from them by focusing on the life force flowing through both humans and nature, expressed through shifting edges, interwoven colors, and organic forms that allow the two to emerge from and merge into one another.

Biography

Yang (Cynthia) Chen is an emerging oil painter based in Sammamish, Washington, and a mother of two. Art and aesthetics have always been central to her life — she has loved drawing since childhood and started oil painting in 2015, largely self-taught with later formal study. Born and raised in China, she later studied and worked in the United Kingdom and the United States, spending over a decade in data analytics. She works in two disciplines: a decade in data analytics trained her to find structure beneath the surface; oil painting taught her to trust what structure cannot hold.
